FanChoco School Caravan a “One Planet. One Health” initiative

Launched in 2017, FanChoco School Caravan Program aims at sensitizing primary schoolchildren (aging from 8 to 13) on the impact of plastic waste on the environment, and on healthy eating and snacking. The goal is to touch 1 million lives of primary schoolchildren by 2030.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the program now also include education on adhering to the COVID-19 hygiene protocols of mask wearing, social distancing, handwashing and sanitizing to ensure everyone's safety.

Partnering with GES (Ghana Education Service), the governmental agency of the Ministry of Education, the Caravan goes to primary schools to

1) sensitize schoolchildren on the importance of proper waste disposal and waste segregation,

2) encourage them to choose healthier snacking options during their break times,

3) (*NEW* COVID-19 recovery) educate schoolkids on the importance of hand washing and the proper wearing of face masks to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The main driver of the program is the "Wrapper Collection promo", a collection competition among schools and schoolkids, in which participating school children are encouraged to properly dispose of Fan Milk product wrappers and indeed other plastic packaging, in designated wrapper collection bins provided by Fan Milk PLC. Collection champions are rewarded with prizes, ranging from branded bags to a Samsung tablet. The collected wrappers are sent to the Pick-It is sorting centre in Tema Newtown to be processed for recycling. Additional segregation bins are also provided to the schools after the promo event to continue proper segregation of waste.

Since its inception, the FanChoco School Caravan has reached over 500,000 pupils in 180,000 schools across Accra, Tema, and Kumasi.

In 2021, the Caravan aims to impact about 100,000 basic schoolchildren from a selected 180 schools in all the regions of the country.

• To touch the lives of 10 million people every day with healthy products; • To touch 100,000 people through the jobs they have in our ecosystem; • To touch the environment by being 100% circular and regenerative; • To touch the rural economy by sourcing over 50% locally.
